An Elegant Facade

I believe this is the first book that I've read by Kristi Ann Hunter, and as much as I wanted to love this book, I just couldn't.  She had an excellent story line, that I thought was fun and very original.  The problem was, it took half of the book to get to it.  The first half of the book didn't capture my attention, as there wasn't much going on to stay interested in.

I feel she would have done better to have started with the second half of the book and began with Georgina's secret and how it was discovered by Colin.  She could have taken that revelation, and used it to develop their relationship right from the beginning.

The second thing I was a bit disappointed in, was the lack of character description of Colin, who is one of the main characters in this book.  When being introduced to a new character, I want some kind of a description, even a very small one, describing what they look like, so that I have a visual as I'm reading.  I was about 50 pages from the end of this book and realized for the first time, that Colin had red hair.  I would rather have known this in the first chapter, when he first appeared.

As much as I wish things would have been a bit different with this book, I do think Kristi Ann Hunter is a great author.  Her writing is smooth and easy to read, and once the story got going, I enjoyed the book a lot more.

* I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publisher, in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own.

What book are you currently reading?

  1. Under-developing characters drives me crazy in books and movies. They need to help you get to know the characters and give you a reason to care about them - whether it's good or bad. Thanks for sharing your opinion, Jenny! Love reading your book reviews :)
